Local retail pack

Every speciality shop that has just opened.

We monitor Google Maps across the whole country and report the speciality food shops and florists that newly appear on it. One list a week, ready to act on.

What is in the local retail pack

A speciality shop picks its wholesaler in the first weeks and then orders from them every week for years. These are the trades we report, in the week they appear.

Bakeries

Bakeries and patisseries, the largest trade in the pack. Flour, fillings, packaging and equipment, and a weekly delivery relationship that once settled is very rarely moved, because the cost of getting it wrong lands at four in the morning. Patisseries buy differently again.

Florists

Florists and flower shops, almost as large. A daily buying trade with a short cycle, where a new shop is choosing between wholesale routes in its first fortnight and then keeps the one that turns up on time. Weddings and funerals make the trade steadier than it looks.

Butchers

Butchers and poulterers. Meat, poultry, packaging and cold storage, plus the service contracts that come with a cold chain. Distinct suppliers, and a trade where reputation between wholesaler and shop travels fast. Poulterers sit beside butchers and buy from different houses again.

Ice cream parlours

Ice cream parlours and ice cream shops. Sharply seasonal, so the openings cluster and the buying window is short, which makes a weekly list worth more here than in any other trade in the pack. Miss the spring and most of the year has gone with it.

Fishmongers and cheese shops

Fishmongers and cheese shops, two small trades with committed and specialised supply. Few openings, but every one of them is a genuine account rather than a name on a prospect list. Both trades buy daily and both are hard to reach through advertising.

And a good deal more

The pack also carries delicatessens and gourmet grocers, chocolatiers and confectioners, greengrocers and fruit and vegetable shops, cold cut counters, coffee roasters and speciality coffee retail. Small trades, but each with its own wholesale tier behind it.
